Pizza Origins: The Wonderful History of Pizza

Pizza holds a special place in many of our hearts. After all, who doesn't love pizza? It’s a cheesy comfort food that’s easily customisable, not to mention delicious! But the big question is where does pizza originate from? Fortunately, the folks at Goodfella’s are here to answer that exact question.

So, fasten your seatbelts, as we take you on an adventure through the wonderful world of pizza.

Where does pizza come from?

To begin this journey, we must take a trip back in time. It’s a warm and breezy day in 16th century Naples, Italy. It’s just gone lunchtime; hustle and bustle fills the air as people rush to get back to work. But wait, what is that delightful smell that’s so inviting and comforting? You’ve guessed it, it’s the smell of the first pizza ever made!

Today, pizza is eaten worldwide, but this was not always the case. Originally, considered a poor man’s food in 16th century Naples, the pizza started with humble beginnings. With square shaped flatbreads, topped with nothing more than garlic, lard, and salt. Fast forward to the 21st century, pizza is a source of pride for Italians, not to mention enjoyed by the whole world!

Whilst Italy is considered the birthplace of pizza, the word pizza was first documented in 997 AD in Gaeta, relating to flatbreads eaten by the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. Now, isn’t that interesting!

But it wasn’t until the 1950’s, that pizza hit its peak popularity when Italians migrated to America. It became a national sensation and news spread to nearby continents. In 1962, the controversial Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada, topped with pineapple and ham…but we’ll leave that debate for another day!

As you can see, pizza has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Here at Goodfella’s, our pizzas have a variety of toppings, so you’re truly spoilt for choice!

We even have a gluten free range and vegan pizza collection , if that’s more to your taste. There really is something for everyone!
